California's on fire, ya'll. One of them is right in my neck of the woods.

The fire started Wednesday on the east side of Chico on Humboldt Road, which is why they've dubbed it "The Humboldt Fire" (which is really confusing because this is not Humboldt County---Chico is about 350 miles west of Humboldt County). Hot winds have been driving the fire east up into the Sierra Nevada foothills, demolishing over 20,000 23,000 acres of my beloved Butte County landscape. Then last night it split into three fires and one of them started moving southwest. The local news keeps saying that only 30 - 40 66 homes have been destroyed, but I just watched a non-local newscast that said at least 100 homes have been destroyed in the town of Paradise. Many of my co-workers have been evacuated from their homes and are scrambling to find places to stay while they await their fate.

These photos aren't mine.

The Govenator declared a state of emergency in Butte County and firefighters from as far away as Beverly Hills are up here helping. There's like 13 wildfires burning all over in this state. I should be out taking pictures but I'm too numb. Under that I'm scared shitless. Not so much for myself, but for my friends and co-workers who live in Paradise. It hurts my soul to see the beauty of this landscape decimated. It's been feeding my soul for so long. I know fire has its place and it's all actually very profound---new life, etc. It's just so.....harsh.

subway cave sign1

20,000 years ago the earth cracked open in a north eastern section of what is now known as California and a river of molten lava flowed out for sixteen miles. As the lava flowed, the outer part cooled and hardened while the inner part remained fluid and continued to flow. When all was said and done, what remained was one of the world's largest known lava tubes.

lassen sign

400,000 years ago there was a volcano that erupted and almost completely destroyed itself. What's left of this volcano is called Mt. Lassen and its peak stands 10,457 feet above sea level in the northeastern part of California. It exploded big time in 1914, some of which was caught on film. It's still geothermally active: brewing, bubbling and spittin' out steam and sulpher. Some areas of Mt. Lassen are reportedly getting hotter, which means it's likely to erupt again in the future.

Mt. Lassen is mostly quite heavenly: steep glaciated valleys, clear mountains streams and lakes surrounded by lush pine forests and fields of wildflowers.

But when the boyfriend and I went there with [livejournal.com profile] metalgypsy and [livejournal.com profile] whosplittheatom, we checked out the hellish parts...Read more... )

Oh my God, I'm so in love you guys. Bury my heart in Plumas County. Just drive up highway 70 east and toss it in the

plumassign

Highway 70 East is the Feather River Scenic Byway. It runs along the north fork of the Feather river into the Sierra Nevada mountains. It cuts through deeply carved canyons and tunnels through giant layers of exfoliating granite. I've driven this road three times in the last four weeks and I can't get enough. I fantasize that all people disappear from the earth so I can explore this highway without you assholes ridin' up on my tail because I'm soakin' it all in and you just want to hurry up and get to where you're going. Well, in my dreams, you're dead, okay? You're gone. Buh-bye. Well, okay, maybe not dead, just fucking off for while, so I can suck the teat of this landscape up into my soul and LIVE, damn it, LIVE for a thousand years, relishing it's beauty!

I want to lick these rocks. Yes, I will marry them and hump them and have their little schisty, batholithic babies.
