Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

GoldBluffs5

The BF and I headed to Gold Bluff Beach on the northern coast for some weekend camping. We brought his crack monkey dog and a good time was had by all. (Actually, I threw many hissy fits on the way but it was all worth it once we got to walking barefoot in the surf and tossing driftwood into the waves for the dog to fetch.) Being a mostly deep-woods camper, this was the first time I ever camped on a beach. I felt awkwardly exposed without a canopy of trees protecting me. But it was pretty damn spiffy blissing out on a campfire and hearing the sounds of the ocean churning behind us. An Elk walked up to the campground about 150 yards from where we were camped. We tried to take some pics but it was dusky and we were too beat to set up the tripod.

FernLog

There's a bunch of hikes along the coast in places called "Fern Canyon." One of them is here at the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Walls of ferns, I tell ya!

ah hey, there is NOTHIN" like beach camping. i've loved it since middle school when our family, aunt's family and mother's best friends fam, but NO DADS, would go camping at Jalama beach which is near lompoc california. it still rings magic inside. several times we've been driving to LA and dan's taken that 17 miles winding road down to the beach to give me back some joyful childhood. i would love to go again, but dan hates beach camping. why i like it besides there is so much to DO (collect shells, seaweed wim, play in water check out tide pools) is there are no snakes that can crawl in tents etc. having lived in the woods, i am snake shy. yr photos are so romantic.

We are from that area (Eureka), and sometimes, not too often but sometimes, I really miss it. Those pictures did the trick.
