Yesterday, some friends and I drove three hours from Chico to UC Berkeley to see the Pixies. It was a Sunday afternoon show slated to start at 3:00 pm. We barely had time to scarf down some "King Dong" Chinese a few blocks from the university before scampering off to the venue.

There were two opening bands, Knife and Fork from the Bay area, and The Thrills. I liked Knife and Fork's lead singer Laurie Hall. Her deep, sultry voice is reminscent of Courtney Love's guttural groans. Knife and Fork are also opening for a PJ Harvey show at the Fillmore coming up in a few weeks.

The Pixies burst on stage a little after 5:00 pm, launching into "Bone Machine."
Pixies set list:
-Bone Machine
-Ed is Dead
-Isla de Encanta
-Caribou
-Dead
-No. 13 Baby
-Wave of Mutilation
-Debaser
-Cactus
-Monkey Gone to Heaven
-Gouge Away
-U-Mass
-Rock Music
-Crackity Jones
-Subbacultcha
-Mr. Grieves
-Here Comes Your Man
-Nimrod's Son
-Winterlong
-In Heaven (The Lady In The Radiator Song)
-Wave of Mutilation [slower version, Frank on acoustic]
-Vamos
-Where is my Mind

Encore:
-?
-Tame
-Hey
-Gigantic

Frank Black has gotten a little husky over the years. Kim Deal wore an extremely bright-orange long-sleeved shirt and brown corduroys, looking as good as ever. They only played for an hour and 20 minutes but they rocked solid and I was hanging on every riff.

Some butt-wad journalist wrote in the current SF Weekly that the Pixies don't deliver a good live show, but that guy needs to repent and come to Jesus because he's just that wrong.

I sure hope there's more of a review to come. That doesn't tell me much :)

Did Dirk beat up anyone trying to talk to you again? Was it a good/bad show? Did you burn your legs into a funky tan? Did the "seats" make your ass hurt? Did you get lost? Lost stories are the best!

I don't think The Synthesis will give you $7 for this review....

Yeah, I posted it before I was done writing it, but now it's all done.

No one got hurt or sun-burned. We brought pads to sit on. Thank you for giving us the low down on those concrete seats.

There were some moments of temporary lostness, but we quickly recovered.

I was driving and I never get lost.
Sometimes I drive around in seemingly random patterns just to give my passengers a thrill, but I'm never lost!

As for my beating anyone up... nope. Nobody needed any physical beatdowns this time around.

I was at the same show down on the floor. It fucking rocked.

They had the crowd eating out of their hands. The Pixies played one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I talked to someone who went to all three shows and she said that the Sunday afternoon one was the best.

Really?

A friend of mine is going to hook me up with a recording of the 9/24 show.

Can't wait!

Yeah...she went to all three and said that the Pixies were just on fire that Sunday and really were just going at it.

I've travelled so much over the past year that it seems they are always around the corner. At least this one was in California, so there was no way I could make it. I'm still sort of surprised they are back to begin with.
